Artist Talk: Trevor Nickolls

Trevor discussed Neo- traditional Aboriginal art work and contemporary art work within Indigenous art and also looked at traditional Indigenous architecture and design.

Vernacular architecture –

Vernacular architecture was not taken seriously until the 19th Century, not until Bernard Rudofsky was commissioned to put together an exhibition for the museum of modern art in New York.  Very few people took a liking to this type of architecture during the romanticism period, which was prior to Bernard Rudofsky’s influence.  Vernacular architecture was much more about looking at a vast range of architectural forms, shapes and expressions, in the late 60’s a concern evolved with seeing these things as responses to cultural and environmental conditions.  This type of architecture was not really seen in early periods of Indigenous shelter.

Aboriginal architecture –

How to go about producing Aboriginal architecture, referring to the types of structural concepts such as, mobility, sustainability, and the whole camp concept.  When much of the Australian Aboriginals would use most of their time and energy on a particular architectural sculpture, it usually represented the fact that they would stay at that location.

As the Aboriginal culture evolved, they would include other factors in their house designs, keeping in mind the issues that they have such as mosquitoes and warmth, incorporating fire and height in the architectural designs, they also used much more stable materials, such as different types of metals, this occurred between 1960’s and the 1970’s.

When Aboriginal architecture is mentioned, no one should immediately suspect any type of architecture just by a name, and should research the evolution of the Aboriginal architecture.
